When I was a small boy my dad used to take me to the Bethlehem roundhouse down below the old Coca Cola bottling plant to watch the engines and other rolling stock be turned around on the turntable and so on. Later, after Conrail allowed the complex to fall onto ruin my friends and I used to explore the whole thing- it was fascinating and a little dangerous. Even the hobo jungles in the woods by the Lehigh river. We'd spend all day, swimming in the canal and playing army in the old buildings. I saw the last steam engine, which was known as Old Slobberface, and climbed around on it until the bulls chased us off. Hardly anyone in Bethlehem knows anything at all about this old place, just east of the Hump where they sorted out the train cars into other local trains for distribution. The Hump is still there. People would pack lunches and walk along the towpath of the old canal and spend hours watching the cars roll down the Hump and crash into their new trains, to be taken out the west end of the railyard and on to their destinations. The whole place was a fascinating adventure for us kids, and it's all gone now. Progress...

Your video of the old abandoned round house could be better if in panning you would go slower. Count one one thousand, two one thousand, as you pan and what you show would be seen. Otherwise, the round house was acwinderous building. Thanks,

Nice video. I plan to make it up there sometime soon. Recently hit up the sand dunes at silver lake on the other side of Michigan and I'd like to put some more use to my Michigan ORV stickers before the years up since I'm a non resident and don't really get up there often. I also agree with your comment on how silly the helmet rule at bearwallow is. I did a video of there as well. I put that place off for the longest because of the helmet thing. Very scenic area and nice park overall but that rule is so stupid for covered vehicles. I'd probably never go back because of that and solely went primarily for the badge. Hopefully Holly Oaks serves a bit better.

I live down the street a bit. I've never heard of white supremacist in the area. I don't see any racism here at all. Heck, most people are related around here and it doesn't matter what color you are. I agree with you about the vandals. Just because something is old doesn't mean it doesn't hold beauty. That is until some punk writes "I was here" and leaves broken bottles because that's so fun. 🙄🙄Good video by the way.

It will take a large company investing in it to bring it back. Ford bought the old train station in Detroit years back. They refurbished it back to its original state and the grand opening was two days ago on Thursday, June 8th. Look it up here on UA-cam. Ford hired the right people to restore it. People who previously stole things, like the old clock, even returned them to be added back into the train station. Would be great if large company could do same there…..just takes a vision and a lot of money. This area could use some good PR, considering the rest of us in country only hear about the bad stuff happening there, like missing kids, drvgs and tr@fficking. Y’all gotta work on getting that crap outta there! Your part of the country is beautiful!

Here is a more kind comment that you are sure to appreciate. I absolutely love your introductory technique with the closet door in your bedroom. What flashes each and every time you open and close it has grabbed my attention to see more. The content of what you have filmed is priceless. My only suggestion I can offer you is to pan much less and let your camera grab the images in front of it slowly. There really is no need for more expensive equipment to produce a much more enticing video. My best recommendation to you as a fellow creator is to slow down which would give us the time to focus in on the scene. You have tremendous potential with your content and I support your future endeavors at producing very interesting content. Best to you!!

I will quickly concur that I agree with what you are saying. I could have made this vid longer thus reducing only speeding up 300x instead of 400x, and honestly, too, my cinematic focus was unfocused as I was more focused on avoiding being seen and escorted off the property, lol. I truly appreciate your comments. I admit all my videos are for my personal consumption and I’m not monetized, but I do want something halfway decent. ( I really do need to switch to another video editor, though -_- ). I’ll take more time filming when I’m less likely to get in trouble 😉

Poor Ward Hinkson , his family and those who loved that estate and it's beautiful gardens and fountains . I definitely can understand why it was heartbreaking😢 . Too bad Ward and his supporters were not able to fight the powers that be and get the Blue Route rerouted . Really too bad the property couldn't have been preserved and maintained as one of the places to see in Pennsylvania . Truly sickening to know a place of such great beauty and peace was destroyed for traffic ... truly gut-wrenching . I remember walking on the side of the road and finding the top part of the gardens and that wall ... and part of what they have shown here but I never went all the way down the hill . Imagine being so fortunate to have lived there or to at least have been a neighbor or a visitor there .

Property has been given to the Pennsylvania Game Commission which plans to remove all remaining structures/ruins and allow nature to reclaim the strip. However, land will be publicly accessible. An earlier post attributed the track's closing to the length of the shutdown area not being able to accommodate higher speed dragsters. This is not accurate. The recording of the 2006 interview with track owner J. Perogino noted that a 1972 track schedule was in place - but the rain before, and during, Hurricane Anges did not allow the schedule to begin. Then the Wilkes-Barre area, where much of the spectator/fan base came from, was completely flooded (including the homes of the Perogino families). The speed of the dragsters didn't just jump up to the point the track was unusable in one off-season. The track's total dimensions are/were 60 feet by 3,300 feet. By today's standards a shut down area of about 2000 feet is short, and it would have been an issue had the track continued, but it didn't cause it to close. I believe there were also some political/fan safety issues coming into play as well - and the liability/legal/insurance stars were aligning to make continued operations infeasible.

My friend and I both worked here for less than one day back in 2001. We were hired as "broke hands" which meant we were responsible for getting down into the broke clean out pit to pull out the paper when the machine malfunctioned with the machine still running just inches above our heads. Because there was no room to stand up or even crouch, we had to crawl on our hands and knees through wet, hot paper pulp and scoop it out of the pit. If we raised any parts of our body too much, we would've been pulled into the rollers and moving parts of the machine and crushed. By lunch time we decided it wasn't worth it and both quit 4 hours into out first shift and walked out. Ironically, I became a firefighter about a year later and responded to the fire in 2003 and helped to fight it for 9 hours. Funny thing is I spent almost 3 years as firefighter and felt safer doing that than the 4 hours i spent working at this mill😅

    • @NotLost

I was wondering about that - there didn't really appear to be a basement, just a crawl space under the sole plates. Sheet breaks are a pain and can be dangerous if you're not careful even on newer paper machines.

I hate arsonists!! I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a professional videographer, and I don't do UA-cam for money - got too much going on. Part of the problem with this hobby is that there's a possibility you could be trespassing so you don't really spend a lot of time analyzing a shot and you don't do re-dos. As to the slow pan, I did, but there's soo much video, that it's rendered at about 3.5x speed. Then to make it worse, Pinnacle Studio video software is pretty crappy and miserable to work with. I do it for the fun and for the history.

I see older videos of this complete trail and some new videos of the beginning. but i think some of the rock garden half way up the trail looked relatively new. thanks for the video and entertainment!
